The Architect of Lies

The year was 2157, and the sky above the city of Aethelgard was a perfect , shimmering violent . It was always violet in the evenings . The citizens loved it. They stood on their high -rise balconies , sipping synthetic wine , admiring the sunset . They didn't know , or perhaps they chose to forget , that the sky was a screen . It was a massive digital projection generated by the Dome that protected them from the " Wasteland " outside .

Elara was an Architect . She did not design buildings ; she designed memories . She worked for Mnemosyne Corp, the most powerful company in Aethelgard. Her office was a small , white room filled with humming servers and holographic screens . People came to her when they wanted to forget a painful breakup , or when they wanted to remember a vacation they never actually took .

" Make the water bluer ," Elara whispered to her computer . She moved her fingers across the floating keyboard . On the screen , a memory of a tropical beach became brighter . The client , a wealthy businessman , wanted to remember a perfect honeymoon . Elara deleted the rain from the original file and added the sound of gentle waves . It was a lie , but it was a beautiful one .

A soft chime interrupted her work . The heavy glass door slid open , and a man stepped inside . He looked different from her usual clients . His clothes were worn and grey , not the bright , fashionable neon synthetics that were popular in the city center . He looked nervous . He kept checking the hallway behind him.

" Can I help you?" Elara asked , straightening her posture . " Appointments are usually booked months in advance ."

The man locked the door . Elara’s heart skipped a beat . She reached for the panic button under her desk , but the man raised his hands .

" Please ," he said , his voice shaking . "I don't want to hurt you. My name is Kael. I need you to look at this."

He placed a small , dirty object on her pristine white desk . It was an ancient data drive , a piece of technology that hadn't been used for fifty years . It was scratched and rusted .

"I can't use this," Elara said , frowning . "It’s obsolete . It’s illegal to possess unlicensed hardware ."

"You are the best Architect in the city ," Kael insisted . "You know how to convert old data . You know the code ." He leaned closer , his eyes intense and desperate . "They told us the world outside is dead . They told us the air is poison and the ground is ash . But this drive ... it came from a drone that crashed yesterday near the perimeter wall ."

Elara stared at the drive . Curiosity was a dangerous trait in Aethelgard, but Elara had always been curious . That was why she was so good at creating details . She slowly took her hand away from the panic button .

" If the Auditors catch us with this, we will be ' reformatted '," Elara warned him. Reformatting was a polite word for having your mind wiped blank .

" If you don't look at it, we are already dead ," Kael replied .

Elara sighed and pulled a universal adapter from her drawer . She connected the rusty drive to her console . Her screens flickered . A loading bar appeared .

The file opened . It wasn't a simulation . It was a raw video feed .

Elara gasped . She expected to see a grey , burning desert . She expected to see monsters or radiation storms . Instead , she saw green .

Massive trees with leaves the size of cars . Rivers of clear , rushing water . Birds with colorful feathers flying through a blue sky —a real blue sky , not the projected violet one . The camera moved , showing a group of people living in a wooden village . They looked healthy . They were laughing .

"It’s... it’s alive ," Elara whispered . "The Wasteland is alive ."

"The war ended decades ago ," Kael said bitterly . " The planet healed itself. But Mnemosyne Corp and the Government kept the Dome active . Why ? Because if we are scared of the outside , we stay inside . We work in their factories , we buy their synthetic food , and we pay for their fake memories ."

Suddenly , the lights in the office turned red . A loud siren began to wail .

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED . SECURITY TEAMS DISPATCHED .

"They found us," Kael shouted . He grabbed the drive . "You have to broadcast this! If you put this on the main server , everyone in the city will see it via their Neural Link ."

"Me?" Elara stood up , knocking over her chair . "I can't ! The firewall is too strong ."

"You have the access codes !" Kael ran to the door as heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway . "I’ll hold them off . Do it, Elara!"

Kael opened the door and ran into the corridor . Elara heard the sound of electric stun - batons and shouting . She knew Kael wouldn't last more than a minute against the Auditors .

She looked at her console . She could delete the file , hide under her desk , and claim Kael attacked her. She could go back to making fake sunsets and fake happiness . She would be safe .

She looked at the screen again . She saw the green trees and the real blue sky . She thought about the millions of people in the city , living in a cage made of lies .

" No more lies ," she said .

Elara’s fingers flew across the keyboard . She bypassed the safety protocols . She routed the signal through the emergency broadcast system .

The door to her office exploded . Two Auditors in black robotic armor stormed in. They raised their weapons .

" Step away from the console !" the mechanical voice commanded .

Uploading ... 40%...

"I said step away !" The Auditor charged his weapon .

Elara didn't look at them. She focused on the code . She needed five more seconds . Just five .

Uploading ... 80%...

She felt a sharp pain in her shoulder as a laser bolt grazed her, burning the fabric of her uniform . She cried out but didn't stop typing . She slammed the ' ENTER ' key .

UPLOAD COMPLETE .

Suddenly , the red alarm lights vanished . The screens in the room went black .

Outside the window , the giant violet sky flickered . It glitched . For a moment , static noise filled the air . Then , the projection failed .

The Dome turned off .

A collective gasp rose from the city below . Millions of people looked up . The artificial violet sunset disappeared , revealing the truth . It was night , but it was a clear , starry night with a bright , white moon . And in the distance , beyond the city walls , they could see the dark silhouettes of a massive forest .

The Auditors in Elara’s office froze . Their orders were coming from a central computer that was now overwhelmed by the new data . They didn't know what to do.

Elara held her injured shoulder and smiled . She was in pain , and she knew she would probably spend the rest of her life running . But as she looked out the window at the real moon , she realized something important .

For the first time in her life , she didn't need to design a memory . This moment was real . And it was perfect .
