The Midnight Note

The university library was almost empty at 9:00 PM. Outside , the rain hit the big glass windows hard . Leo sat at a small corner table , trying to study for his history exam . He opened the used textbook he bought that morning . It was cheap because the cover was damaged .

As he turned the page to Chapter 4, a folded piece of paper fell out . It landed softly on the wooden table . Leo frowned . He looked around , but the librarian was typing on her computer , and the other students were wearing headphones . No one was watching him.

Slowly , he unfolded the paper . It was a photograph . In the picture , there was a red door with a silver handle . Leo stopped breathing for a second . He knew that door perfectly . It was the entrance to the old basement in the science building . Students were strictly not allowed to go there .

He turned the photo over . On the back , there was a message written in messy , blue ink :

I know what you found . Meet me there at midnight .

Leo’s hands started to shake . He felt cold . He didn't tell anyone about the money he found last week . It was a secret . He thought he was safe .

Leo looked at his watch . It was 11:30 PM. He had exactly thirty minutes to decide . Should he run , or should he find out who was watching him? He grabbed his jacket , put the photo in his pocket , and walked quickly toward the exit .

The wind blew hard against Leo’s face as he ran across the campus . The science building looked like a giant , dark shadow in the night . There were no lights on in the windows .

Leo pushed the heavy front door . Surprisingly , it was unlocked . He turned on his phone ’s flashlight and walked slowly down the long hallway . The air smelled of old chemicals and dust . His heart was beating very fast . Thump-thump, thump-thump. He was terrified , but he could not turn back now .

Finally , he saw it. The red door .

In the photograph , the door was closed . Now , it was slightly open . A thin line of yellow light came from inside the room . Leo wanted to run away , but he needed to know the truth about the note . He took a deep breath and pushed the red door open .

The room was small and full of old boxes . In the center , a figure stood with their back to him. The person was wearing a dark grey hoodie .

"I thought you wouldn't come ," the person said calmly .

Leo froze . He knew that voice perfectly . It wasn't a stranger . It was his best friend , Sam.

Sam turned around slowly , holding a thick , black notebook in his hands . "We need to talk about the money , Leo. And we need to talk about what you really saw last week ."

Leo stepped back toward the exit . "Sam? Why are you here ? Did you write the note ?"

" Because ," Sam whispered , stepping closer , " finding that money wasn't an accident . It was a test . And you are failing ."

Leo’s heart was racing . " What test , Sam? I found that money in a trash can near the gym . It was just luck !"

Sam shook his head sadly . " Nothing at this university is luck , Leo. There is a secret group of former students called The Architects . They watch everyone . They left that money to see if you were honest or greedy ."

Sam opened the black notebook . It was full of photos of other students . "I work for them because I have no choice . I had to report you when you didn't hand the money to the police . Now , they want their money back , plus interest ."

Suddenly , the heavy front door of the science building slammed shut . They heard heavy footsteps in the hallway . Someone was coming .

"You have to go ," Sam whispered , his voice shaking . " If they find us together , they will think I am helping you. Take the back stairs . Go to the security office and tell them everything ."

"But what about you?" Leo asked . He felt a mix of anger and fear . His best friend was a spy , but he was also trying to save him now .

"I’ll tell them you escaped ," Sam said , pushing Leo toward a small door behind the boxes . " Run , Leo! And get rid of that money . It's not worth your life ."

Leo didn't wait . He ran into the darkness of the back stairs . As he reached the street , he looked back at the science building . The lights in the basement went out . He didn't have the money anymore , but he had something more dangerous : the truth about the university . The game was just beginning .
